  • Plan ahead, it's attention to detail that makes the difference. Allow plenty of time to prepare for your party, make a list. Things are hectic when party-time approaches so stay organized.

  • Create your guest list. You may want to allow siblings to invite a friend so they don't feel left out of the fun.

  • Pick the party date and time. Children's birthday parties are usually 1-1/2 to 3 hours long.

  • Order party supplies, decorations, party favors, activities and prizes for games. Be sure to order extra balloons and streamers for decorating.

  • Remember the invitation needs to have the following information:
    * Location of the party and a map if necessary
    * Starting and ending time
    * Whether parents are invited
    * Special activities that might require special clothing
    * Your phone number

  • Keep the food simple; children are happy with hamburgers, hotdogs, pizza or chicken nuggets. Their favourite food is often the cake!

  • Be sure there's plenty to do. Put out some toys out that the kids are willing to share so the early arrivals can play while we wait for the others.

  • Don't forget about safety. You don't usually think of birthday parties as especially dangerous, but there a few safety tips to remember that could make the day trouble free. If you plan to decorate with balloons, remember that balloons are a major choking hazard for young kids. Keep the balloons out of reach or use Mylar balloons.
