Communication Topic: Turn Taking

Objectives:
1. The students will demonstrate that they are taking turns during a conversation.

Resources/Materials: a wooden stick ie a ruler

Spring Board Role Play: Have several students talk at same time.

Freeze: Then freeze role role play and ask students to describe what happened.

Follow up questions:
1. What would happen if everyone talked at the same time?
2. What is turn taking?

Turn Taking Stick Role Play: Have students take turns talking.
However, only the person with the wooden stick is allowed to talk.

Follow up Discussion:
Have the students then discuss what happened during the role play.

Follow up Questions::
1. Did having the stick make it easier to determine whose turn it was to talk?
2. Are there any other advantages to using the turn taking stick?
3. What are the disadvantages of having the stick?

Communication Challenge:
Have students analyze conversations and turn taking at: home, school, community.
