Several centuries ago explorers travelled from Europe to North
America and rediscovered North America; at this time they called
the region 'The New World'. In the earlier years they established
trading posts throughout this new world and engaged in trade with
the natives of the different regions. Eventually many more Europeons
arrived and settled in small towns and cities. Some were a part of
the fur trade, while others worked in mines, sawmills ... or farmed
the land.
The Birth of Two Nations
In 1776 the colonists who lived in the southern part of this new land
decided to break away from the control of England and establish their
own nation; this new country was named the United States. About a
100 years later a similar process took place north of this new country;
in 1867 the colonists of the north established their own country;
it was named Canada.
This new country had tremendous potential:
- it was the second largest country in the world
- there were huge forest reserves; on the West Coast
which would eventually be called British Columbia was
an unbelievable forest that had one of the fastest
growing rates in the world
- in the middle of the country were the three prairie
provinces; they would soon be largest wheat production
region of the world
- in the Heart Land in what is now called Ontario
was one of the World's greatest wonders, 'The Niagara
Falls'
- in the East four new provinces were formed; they were
part of the Atlantic Ocean coastline and contained the
greatest fishing stalks in the world
- throughout this new country were incredibly vast
resources of gold, silver, aluminum, lead, zinc,
petroleum (eg oil), wild life, pure water, clean air, etc. etc.
